Blaise fell asleep with his brother beside him, and woke to see his bride. Ava lay stretched out, head resting on a pillow, watching him.

“Hello, bride.”

“You’ve been very sick.”

“Aye.” Blaise shifted a little, wincing at the pain in his shoulder as he did so.

Ava stroked his bare chest, which was bruised both from his battle with the grypon and the brutality of his last night, where he’d gone half-mad as the dregs of the poison had left his body. He’d apologized to Malack, who had forgiven him easily, but it still didn’t sit well that he’d injured a friend.

“You almost died.” Her voice grew hard. “You’ve been hysterical and beating on people, and you’ve got a massive cut on your back. They said you had poison in you.”

She looked so angry Blaise actually wanted to laugh. “Wee bride, are ye saying ye were a bit worried for me?”

“Of course! You’re part of my Clan! And the others, they need you to lead them. And I….” She looked away, but not before Blaise saw the tears in her eyes. “I don’t love you,” she finally said. “Some days I don’t even like you. But… I think I could. I just need more time.”

Blaise tugged her closer, gently easing her down on his non-injured shoulder. She cried softly as he stroked her hair. What she’d said had not been the stuff of romance, but it was enough to give him hope.

The first day after his injury, Blaise’s Clanmates hovered round him, bringing him tea and rubbing his feet and cosseting him like a babe. The second day, they took turns remaining at his side. By the third day, he heard constant whispered arguments outside the bedchamber, and had only occasional visitors.

His idiot brother had been placed in charge of his recovery, and he was ready to throttle the wee bastard. “This ain’t food!” he roared at Daven, hurling the bowl of broth from whence it had come. “I said I wanted some real food!”

The hunter calmly picked up the bowl. “Good thing that was wood.” He knelt and began to wipe the mess.

“Forget that, b’y, and bring me some fuckin’ meat!”

Daven did not look up. “Killian says not yet. But ye gets to try some mashed roots tonight. He’s stewin’ them up special for ye.”

Mouthy little prick. “If I’d the strength to get from this bed, I’d beat ye.”

“Seein’ as how ye can’t get to the privy on your own, I’d say that’s unlikely.”

Of course he had to be reminded of that! “Well, those fools who built this Cave made it too damn far away! How’s a body supposed to get there if it’s unwell?”

“Killian brought ye a piss-bag,” Daven reminded him.

“He took it away again!”

“After ye threatened to shove it down his throat.” The hunter finished his cleaning and rose. “Ye need anything else?”

“Aye. Send someone a little less sharp-tongued in here. Ye have no idea how to care for the wounded.”

Daven’s jaw twitched. “Can’t.”

“What do ye mean? I knows the others are out there.
